pixetra club is proud to present a selection of birdlife portraits by Nidhin Poothully. Here's Nidhin's story as told to Aparna Umaparvathi:
Photography for me is more than just a hobby. I was bitten by the shutterbug in my early teens. Right from my schooldays when all my friends were busy playing sports or other games, I spent my free time trying to understand nature and wildlife. I learned much from magazines and from watching TV - I owe a lot to those lovely television channels that carry natural history and wildlife programs.
I am really fascinated by the checks and balances in the wild: how animals maintain a life of balance and discipline without authoritative policing! I've been going to wildlife sanctuaries with close friends and each time I take a trip, I learn a tremendous amount. Every visit to the wilderness is an opportunity to bring back something new that I have discovered. Learning is not always in books and classrooms - often the best lessons are out there waiting to be absorbed.
I want to make a difference as a nature lover, however small. I am too minute an entity in the vastness that nature is - especially the diversity of nature in India. I cannot even hope to make a small dent by talking or writing about nature. I am not trying to motivate anybody to take up conservation this way. But I think I can make a difference through photography. This is why I have decided to capture nature through my lens.
I am late bloomer in the world of SLR photography. I spent a lot of time with my point and shoot camera that I used to carry everywhere I went. But now that I have started taking nature photography seriously and bought myself a DSLR, there is no looking back. I have recently started a tech job in Bangalore (my home is Cochin) and this afforded me the blessing of a Canon EOS 30D and some cool lenses including the 300mm L lens with a matched 1.4X telephoto converter.
I am very happy that I am able to portray the beauty of the wilderness and nature through my pictures. I am hoping this will create awareness and help people understand how much beauty there is out there. And we all have a responsibility to preserve and conserve this beauty so that we can enjoy it for years to come.
